Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups jowar flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Ghee for brushing
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing, optional

Instructions

  • Take 2 cups of water in a kadai or a pan and boil it with 1 tsp of salt. When it does, put 1.5 cups of jowar flour and stir it continuously to make a thick paste of it. Now, turn off the stove, cover the pan with a lid and let it sit for about 10 minutes to cool down.
  • Check the consistency and softness of the dough after 10 minutes.
  • Transfer the dough paste to a bowl and knead it nicely to make the final soft dough.
  • Make as many dough balls you need. (Pro tip: The dough balls to make jowar roti should be slightly bigger than the balls to make traditional atta rotis).
  • Take one dough ball and coat it nicely with dry flour.
  • Roll it to make a roti. It must be a bit thick.
  • The shape of the roti may not be perfectly round. Use a cutter to get a perfectly round roti.
  • Make all the rotis and keep them aside on a plate.
  • Now, heat a tawa nicely on a high flame. When it is hot, turn the flame to medium to low and place a roti on the tawa. Let it cook for a minute.
  • Flip the roti to cook the other side for another minute.
  • Flip it a couple of times and the roti will start puffing up. Once it is cooked nicely on both the sides, apply a bit of ghee on it and brush it nicely on both the sides.
  • Repeat the steps to make all the rotis, put them on a plate, garnish with a few coriander leaves and enjoy them hot with any side dish of your choice.

Notes

Always use hot water to make the dough for a soft and fluffy roti.
Each roti should be a bit on the thicker side or else it will not cook nicely and be fluffy.
I have used a cutter to get perfectly round rotis. You may skip the step if you want.
Garnishing the rotis with chopped coriander leaves is optional.
I have used ghee to brush the rotis. You can use butter or cooking oil in its place.
