Ingredients

To make the mutton stuffing for the momos:

  • 250 gram mutton minced
  • 1 cup onion finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic-chili paste
  • 1 cup carrot grated
  • 1 cup cabbage finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ tbsp black pepper powder
  • Refined oil to grease the plate

To make the dough for the momos:

  • 250 gram refined wheat flour
  • Salt A pinch
  • 1 tbsp refined oil
  • Water As required

To steam the mutton momos:

  • Water As required

Instructions

  • Knead a soft dough with 250 gram of refined wheat flour, 1 tbsp of refined oil, salt and water as required. (Pro tip: Knead the dough and keep it covered for 15 minutes. This will help it set properly).
  • Heat 1 tbsp of cooking oil in a frying pan. Fry 1 cup of finely chopped onion, 1 tsp of ginger, garlic and green chili paste until the onion turns slightly golden.
  • Now, add 250 gram minced mutton. Mix well and fry for 2 minutes.
  • Then add 1 cup carrot (grated) and 1 cup cabbage (finely chopped), mix them nicely with the mutton mixture.
  • Add salt to taste and ½ tbsp black pepper powder. Mix and cook until the water evaporates.
  • Now, add ½ tbsp garam masala powder. Mix it nicely with the mutton mixture. Turn off the gas stove and let it cool.
  • Roll out a few small dough balls like a thin puri, place the minced mutton mixture in the middle and shape it like a traditional momo. (Pro tip: Ensure the minced mutton mixture is cold while filling, otherwise the momos will be too soft and a watery liquid will come out).
  • Grease the momo steamer or a plate with holes and place the momos in it.
  • Take adequate water in a kadai and boil it.
  • Place the plate with the momos on the top of the kadai, cover it and steam them for 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Check your homemade delicious mutton momos after 10 minutes or so. They should be ready. (Pro tip: If you are using an electric steamer, cook till light becomes visible).
  • Take them out on a plate and serve them hot with tomato ketchup and enjoy.

Notes

You may add a little lemon juice to the filling. This will make the momos taste even better.
I always fill the minced meat after cooling it, this way the momo wrapper does not burst.
Do not over-stuff the momo with the mutton mixture, otherwise they will break and open while steaming.
Do not place the momos close to each other on the plate, otherwise they will stick and will be difficult to remove.
I have given traditional shapes to my momos. You can be as creative as you want.
