Chai Masala Powder | Masala Tea Spice Blend

Chai Masala Powder is a blend of aromatic spices like cardamom, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, and more, crafted to add a burst of flavor to your tea.

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup Green cardamom
  • 5 pieces Black cardamom
  • 2 tbsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp Cloves
  • 6 pieces Cinnamon sticks (small)
  • 1 tsp Dry ginger
  • 1 piece Nutmeg
  • 1 piece Star anise

Instructions
 

  • Take a frying pan and heat it on a low flame. In the pan put ½ cup of green cardamom, 5 pieces of black cardamom, 2 tbsp of black pepper, 2 tbsp of fennel seeds, 1 tbsp cloves, and 6 small pieces of cinnamon sticks.
  • Stir the ingredients continuously for about 2 to 3 minutes until you smell the aroma of the roasted spices.
  • Transfer them onto a plate and set it aside to cool off.
  • Now, to roast the second set of ingredients put one small piece of dry ginger, one piece of nutmeg, and a piece of star anise.
  • Stir it continuously as well for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Transfer it to the plate as well.
  • Now, put all the roasted and cooled ingredients into a grinder.
  • Grind it nicely into a fine powder and your chai masala powder is ready.

Notes

  1. Always use fresh whole spices of high quality to make chai masala powder. Roast them carefully so as not to burn them. Stir them continuously over a low flame until they release their natural oils and aroma.
  2. Make sure you let the roasted whole spices sit for a while to cool down completely before grinding them. This will prevent clumping due to condensation and render a smooth and consistent texture to the masala powder.
  3. Grind them a couple of times to achieve a smooth texture of the powder. It will enhance the natural flavor and taste. Strain the husk every time, grind them again, and add to the powder. It will enhance the flavor even further. 
  4. Though I like it mild, you can make your masala powder bolder by increasing the amount of cloves and black pepper. It’s your personal preference.
