Chai Masala Powder

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Chai masala is an exotic blend of aromatic spices like cloves and cardamom, roasted and ground to a smooth powder.
  • Apart from tea or chai, you can add this powder to smoothies and lattes. Some people also prefer using it to make baked foods, to add flavor to their yogurt-based drinks, desserts, and even ice creams sometimes.
  • Always store your chai masala powder in an airtight container inside a cupboard in a cool, dark place. This will prevent heat and sunlight from spoiling the flavor and freshness of the masala powder.
  • Chai masala powder tastes mildly spicy. It is also sweet and distinctively earthy due to the perfect roasting of the whole spices.

Notes

  1. Always use fresh whole spices of high quality to make chai masala powder. Roast them carefully so as not to burn them. Stir them continuously over a low flame until they release their natural oils and aroma.
  2. Make sure you let the roasted whole spices sit for a while to cool down completely before grinding them. This will prevent clumping due to condensation and render a smooth and consistent texture to the masala powder.
  3. Grind them a couple of times to achieve a smooth texture of the powder. It will enhance the natural flavor and taste. Strain the husk every time, grind them again, and add to the powder. It will enhance the flavor even further.
  4. Though I like it mild, you can make your masala powder bolder by increasing the amount of cloves and black pepper. It’s your personal preference.
