Chicken Achari Tikka

Chicken achari tikka is made with fried chicken, cut into small pieces, which are marinated with yogurt, onion, ginger-garlic paste, green chili paste, coriander seed powder, Kashmiri red chili powder, dry mango powder, Kasuri Methi, garam masala powder, salt, lemon juice, and mustard oil and then finally smoked to get a tandoori-like flavor.

Ingredients
  

To marinate the chicken pieces:

  • 500 grams chicken boneless
  • 3 tbsp yogurt thick
  • 1 piece onion medium size, finely chopped, juice squeezed out
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp green chili paste
  • ½ tsp coriander seed powder
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder
  • 1 tsp dry mango powder amchur
  • ½ tsp dry fenugreek leaves Kasuri Methi
  • ½ tsp garam masala powder
  • 2 tbsp mustard oil
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp roasted chickpea powder

To make the achari masala:

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp fennel seeds
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp fenugreek seeds
  • ¼ tsp nigella seeds
  • 5 pieces dry red chilies
  • 10 pieces curry leaves

To fry the marinated chicken pieces:

  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • Steel or bamboo skewers as needed

To smoke the fried chicken achari tikkis:

  • 1 tsp cooking oil or ghee
  • 1 piece hot charcoal

To garnish the chicken achari tikkis:

  • Coriander leaves a handful, finely chopped
  • Lemon juice as required

Instructions
 

  • Dry roast 1 tsp of cumin seeds, ½ tsp of fennel seeds, ½ tsp of mustard seeds, ¼ tsp of fenugreek seeds, ¼ tsp of nigella seeds, 5 pieces of dry red chilies, and 10 pieces of curry leaves.
  • Make a coarse powder.
  • Marinate and cover 500 grams of boneless chicken with this powder along with 3 tbsp of thick yogurt, 1 piece of onion (medium size, finely chopped, juice squeezed out), 1 tbsp of ginger garlic paste, 1 tsp of green chili paste, ½ tsp of coriander seed powder, 1 tsp of Kashmiri red chili powder, 1 tsp of dry mango powder (amchur), ½ tsp of dry fenugreek leaves (Kasuri Methi), ½ tsp of garam masala powder, 2 tbsp of mustard oil, 2 tsp of lemon juice, and 1 tsp of salt.
  • Mix 2 tsp of roasted chickpea powder.
  • Insert 4 or 5 marinated chicken pieces in a skewer.
  • Fry them in 1 tbsp of cooking oil on a high heat.
  • Smoke them.
  • Transfer them onto a plate. Garnish with a few finely chopped coriander leaves and lemon juice.
  • Your spicy and tasty homemade chicken achari tikka is ready.

Notes

I use boneless leg pieces to make this dish as they are very juicy. You can choose from breast pieces, though. 
You may use chaat masala in the place of amchur if not available. And, for spicier tikkis, add additional green chili paste.
I cover and keep aside the marinated boneless chicken pieces for half an hour for the authentic taste and flavor.
Roasted chickpea powder acts as a nice binding agent.
You can fry the marinated chicken pieces directly on a tawa instead of using a steel or bamboo skewer.
