Sattu drink is one of the most refreshing and wholesome fresh drinks in the different parts of India and especially to combat the summer heat. The primary constituent of the drink is flour of roasted chickpea (sattu), which is then mixed with flavoring agents such as mint and coriander, sour mango, green chilies, onion, lemon juice, and seasoning with roasted cumin powder and black salt. Water is poured into the mixture, and the beverage is chilled, usually with ice cubes; hence it serves both as a refreshing and energizing drink. The first time I came across this Sattu Drink recipe was during my visit to my sister-in-law’s place in Delhi last summer. She was making it for her family to help them cool down in the heat and the scent of fresh mint and tangy raw mango drew me in immediately. Seeing my fascination, she very patiently told me the recipe and also shared some tips on how to add lemon, spices, and sattu to balance the flavors. I carefully wrote down each detail in my kitchen notebook so that I could make the drink later at home and even made a couple of notes for myself on how to change the spice and sweetness to taste.
The following weekend I made it for my husband and my two sons and I was so eager to see their reaction. I made the drink as noted in my recipe and it turned out to be quite nice and refreshing. My husband liked the flavor and the tangy taste while my two sons did not say anything; they just put their glasses forward silently asking for a second helping. Their happiness made me feel happy and grateful that I came across this simple yet wonderful and nutritious recipe.
