I got this recipe from a crafts teacher at my son’s summer camp. We were waiting at the bus stop while coming back when she asked whether I would like to have a cup of tea from the roadside stall. She giggled. “It helps me stay energized.” I agreed. While talking over a cup of tea, she narrated me this specific chai recipe.

I made it that weekend. My husband liked its creativity, and my boys said it tasted “like a fun camp.” Now, it is our favorite tea. That brief interaction reminded me that art is not limited to paper or scissors—sometimes, the most creative ideas come folded in lunchboxes, passed with smiles and genuine warmth.

How to Make Cutting Chai? (Step by Step Guide with Images)

Step 1: Heat 1 cup of water in a saucepan on a medium flame and add 3 pods of crushed cardamom (Elaichi) to it along with an inch of grated ginger. Let it come to a boil.

Boiling cardamom and ginger in water

Step 2: Then, add 2 tsp of tea leaves (powder) and give it a nice stir. Let it come to a boil.

Adding tea leaves

(Pro tip: I have used regular CTC chai here. You can use other variants as well).

Step 3: Now, add 2 tsp of sugar to the boiling tea, stir and let it boil for 5 minutes on a medium to high flame. Now, reduce the flame and pour in ¾ cup of milk to the chai. Give it a nice stir and let it boil for 2 minutes. Stir the chai in between. Turn off the flame once it boils.

Adding milk

Step 4: Filter the chai in a glass or a cup with a strainer. Your cutting chai is ready. Enjoy it hot with biscuits.

Notes

When you crush the cardamom pods, remove the seeds first and then crush them along with the skin.
I always use grated ginger and not ginger paste to make cutting chai. It gives the authentic flavor and taste.
If you want a stronger flavor in your cutting chai, boil the tea for a little longer.
Though I have used two teaspoons of sugar for making two glasses of cutting chai, you can increase or decrease the quantity as per your preference.
