I got this recipe from a woman who sells bangles during the Navratri market with her husband selling Adrak chai alongside. While buying colorful sets, I complimented the taste and smell of the chai. She said it keeps her going during fasting days. I inquired whether I could have the recipe for it. She was glad and immediately “ordered” her husband to narrate the recipe to me.

I made it the next day. My husband loved its simplicity, and my sons also wanted to have some and liked the taste and flavor. Now, it is our festive tea. That interaction reminded me how devotion comes in many forms—sometimes shining in colors, sometimes sizzling and boiling in a saucepan during fasts with faith.

Notes

I have used local CTC tea leaves in the recipe. If you are using premium quality tea, take a bit more of tea leaves to make Adrak chai.
Simmer your tea; do not rush the process. This will allow time to the ginger to infuse properly.
For extra Kadak chai, add a splash of milk only after the color develops. Also, adding cardamom enhances the flavor of the tea, however, it is optional.
I always use freshly crushed ginger, not paste to make Adrak chai. It gives the authentic taste.
Do not add milk, tea leaves, sugar, and ginger all together to make your tea. It will not give the authentic taste.
