Once, I visited a local sari store with my sister-in-law to buy saris and get a few blouses stitched. While we were waiting for our blouses to be stitched, the owner of the store came up with these fresh homemade sandwiches with a cup of hot tea. That smell alone pulled me in – impossible not to praise her kitchen skills. She said she had made them from scratch, grinning wide. When I asked about the recipe, she jotted it down without fuss.
I gave it a try the following afternoon, right before tea. It went great with chai, according to my husband and my kids wouldn’t stop begging for seconds. Ever since, we’ve turned to this fish sandwich every time teatime rolls around. Who’d have thought buying a saree would lead to something so tasty? Not just cloth came home that day – there was joy, spice, and a moment worth keeping.

Step 1: Take 250 grams or 2 medium-sized pieces of Indian mackerel fish in a pan and pour ½ cup of water along with ¼ tsp of salt, ¼ tsp of turmeric powder, and ½ tsp of black pepper powder. Cook them for 10 minutes on a low flame on one side and then flip to cook the other side as well.

Step 2: When done, transfer them to a plate and allow them to cool. Then, remove the bones and mince the fish.
Step 3: Heat 1 tbsp cooking oil in a frying pan. By that time, finely chop one medium-sized onion and add it to the oil when hot. Stir fry them until the onions turn soft and translucent.
Step 4: Then, add salt to taste and ½ tsp of black pepper powder to it. Mix them and then add 1 tbsp red chili flakes to it.
Step 5: Mix all the spices nicely and add the minced fish to it and sauté it nicely over a medium to high flame. Remove when the color of the fish changes to light brown and allow to cool.

Step 6: When the fish mixture is cool enough, add 2 tbsp of mayonnaise and mix nicely. Keep it aside.

Step 7: Now, take a bread slice, remove the edges, and apply a generous amount of mayonnaise on it. Also, put a generous amount of fish stuffing on it.

Step 8: Now, spread the fish stuffing evenly on the surface of the bread and top it with a few pieces of lettuce to cover the stuffing. Then, take another bread slice with mayonnaise brushed on its inside to cover it up nicely. Repeat steps 7 and 8 to make all the sandwiches.
Step 9: Now, brush some cooking oil on a tawa and put it on low to medium heat. Place the fish sandwiches on it when hot. Press and let them cook on both sides.

Step 10: Remove the sandwich when done and cut it diagonally.
