I came across this recipe very interestingly. One day, my younger son handed me a hand-painted bookmark he got in school. There was this recipe written at the backside. I instantly remembered the discussion I had with the art teacher on food when she promised to share a simple recipe with me. This was it. I was touched.

I tried it the same week. My husband said it was “artistic cooking,” and my sons were proud. Now, this is our bookmark recipe. That little surprise reminded me how teaching and cooking go hand in hand—each one leaving colorful impressions on minds, hands, and taste buds alike.

How to Make Garlic Naan? (Step by Step Guide with Images)

Step 1: Take 250 grams or 2 cups of refined wheat flour (maida) in a large tray and make a hole in the middle as shown in the image below. Now, add 2 tsp of sugar, 1 tsp of salt, a pinch or 1/8 tsp baking soda, and ¼ tsp of baking powder to it. Mix these ingredients nicely first and then add ½ cup of Dahi in it.

Adding Dahi to maida

Step 2: Mix the Dahi with the maida first and then add milk as required. Knead it very nicely for about 4 to 5 minutes to make a dough. Then add 1 tbsp of cooking oil to it and continue kneading to make a soft and slippery dough.

Making the dough

Step 3: Make small dough balls; brush them with a little bit of cooking oil and dry maida. Keep them on the tray.

Making dough balls

Step 4: Then, cover them with a piece of cotton cloth and then with a plate. Let them rest for at least 4 to 5 hours.

Resting dough balls

(Pro tip: If you are in a hurry, you can put them in an oven with the lights on or in sunlight for 2 hours).

Step 5: In the meantime, take 10 cloves of garlic and 1 tbsp of coriander leaves and chop them very finely.

Chopped ginger and coriander leaves

(Pro tip: Chopping garlic finely is crucial as it will prevent the naan from cracking).

Step 6: Now, arrange maida, water, and butter as required and put an iron tawa on your gas stove on a medium flame to preheat. Then, take one dough ball and dip it in the dry maida nicely to coat it from all sides. Flatten it with your fingers a bit and put some chopped garlic and coriander on it. Press them with your finger slightly.

Applying garlic and coriander

Step 7: Apply some dry maida on it and roll the naan as shown in the image below. Then, flip it and roll again to give a longitudinal shape. Brush this side with water.

Rolling Garlic Naan

Step 8: Put it on the preheated tawa with this side facing down. Press it gently so that it sticks to the tawa.

Roasting Garlic Naan

(Pro tip: Do not use non-stick tawa or an iron tawa left unused for a long time to make naan. It will not stick properly on the tawa. Make sure the tawa is medium hot or else the naan will not stick properly and fall off).

Step 9: When you see bubbles on the surface, flip the tawa with the naan sticking on it and fry it directly on the flame.

Flipping and roasting Garlic Naan

(Pro tip: Keep some distance between the flame and the naan to prevent it from burning on the outside and remaining uncooked from the inside).

Step 10: Your naan is done after 30 seconds or so. Remove it from the tawa onto a plate. Brush it with butter on top. Repeat the process to make all the garlic naans.

Removing Garlic Naan

Step 11: Your quick and easy homemade garlic naan is now ready to enjoy. Arrange them in a basket and serve along with a veg or non-veg dish of your choice.

Notes

Adding sugar to the maida will not only make the naans sweet but will also help render a beautiful color.
I prefer not adding any water to make the dough. Milk makes the dough and eventually the naans softer.
I have used cooking oil to knead the dough. You can use ghee or butter for the same.
Always make the dough balls first and then let them rest covered with a piece of cotton cloth so that the surface does not become dry and develop cracks.
The quantity of garlic should be double that of the coriander leaves in this recipe.
