In our home, eggs are usually consumed as hard-boiled egg curry, or omelette. I never knew poached eggs could be made in different ways and taste so good unless I had it in a local tea stall in Kolkata. I watched the process closely as the man made the poached eggs effortlessly.

When I can back home, I tried making them just as the man did in the tea stall. The first attempt was not good, the second was better, and the third was excellent. Now, we usually have poached eggs in breakfast. My kids love them.

How to Make Poached Egg? (Step by Step Guide with Images)

For Making Poached Egg with Oil:

Step 1: Take a frying pan and put 1 tbsp of cooking oil in it. Spread and heat the oil. Add the egg gently so that the yolk is intact.

Step 2: Add a pinch of regular table salt and ¼ tsp of black pepper powder to it. Let it cook for about a minute or so on a medium flame.

Adding salt and black pepper to Poached Egg

(Pro tip: I am using one egg. You can use two if you want. In that case, repeat the process of cooking the other egg. Alternatively, if you are comfortable, you can put both eggs together and make a double-poach).

Step 3: When it is cooked nicely, use a wooden spatula to transfer the poached egg carefully to a plate.

Removing Poached Egg

(Pro tip: It is good to use a wooden spatula. A metal one will have sharp edges which might break the egg yolk. You may flip the egg to cook the top surface. However, I like traditional poached eggs with the sunny side up).

Step 4: Serve it hot.

For Making Poached Egg without Oil:

Step 2: In the meantime, take a small bowl, preferably made of stainless steel. Brush it with a little bit of oil. This will make it easy to take out the poached eggs from the bowls.

Greasing a bowl to make Poached Egg

(Pro tip: Since I am making one egg poach, I have taken one bowl. If you are making two or more, take more bowls. You can also use one bowl a number of times, but that will be time-consuming. Make sure the bowls are of stainless steel as you will need to put them in hot water to cook the eggs).

Step 3: Take a little bit of hot water in the bowl. Break the egg very carefully so that you do not break the egg yolk.

Egg in a bowl

(Pro tip: You need not add any more salt to it because the water already is saline and the vinegar will do the rest. Do not worry about the egg white spreading on the water because the vinegar added to the water will hold it together).

Step 4: Put the bowl with the egg into the pan with boiling water. Cover the pan to cook the egg for a minute. Now, remove the cover and let the egg cook for another 5 to 6 minutes on a medium flame.

Egg bowl in boiling water

(Pro tip: Do not cook the egg with the cover for a long time or else the egg yolk will become hard).

Step 5: When done and the egg white becomes thick and solidifies, turn the flame of your gas stove off and take out the bowl very carefully from the pan with a pair of tongs.

Step 6: Put the bowl on a plate. Use a small plastic spatula to take out the egg poach and put it on the plate.

Notes

Handle the eggs with care and break them carefully to ensure that the yolk is intact. This will make the poached eggs look just perfect.
Cook the eggs on medium heat for about a minute but do not overcook. This will help get the right texture.
I typically use a wooden spatula. This helps in moving and flipping them without breaking the yolk.
To make a poached egg without oil, boil the water first. This will help in cooking the eggs perfectly.
I typically do not cover while cooking the eggs. However, if you do, do not cover the egg for too long or the yolk will become too hard.
